Let your legislators know that Kentucky's LGBTQI+ kids deserve better than being targeted for harassment, neglect, abuse, and discrimination.
This is in response to the passage of Senate Bill 150 in the 2023 Kentucky General Assembly. Senate Bill 150 effectively targets the rights and well-being of Kentucky's transgender and gender diverse youth. The final version of the bill bans gender-affirming care for minors and nullifies trans-inclusive policies in the Kentucky Board of Education and the Kentucky Department of Education. The bill also eliminates a parent's right to affirm their child's gender identity. SB 150 interferes with the doctor-patient relationship by limiting physicians' ability to provide essential medical care. Gender-affirming care is a crucial aspect of medical care for children with gender dysphoria, as it can dramatically improve mental health outcomes. An outright ban on this kind of care will lead to long-term negative consequences for these children. Additionally, it produces barriers to healthcare access for transgender and gender nonconforming children by forcing them to seek care from either untrained or unlicensed practitioners or travel distances to access care in states where gender-affirming care is still permitted.
Furthermore, provisions of the bill regarding pronoun usage and bathroom policing will only further marginalize and stigmatize the transgender community, particularly young students. These changes violate their fundamental right to dignity and respect.
