"KYLP has helped me tremendously through my transition and family hardships. I couldn't have gotten my name change without Keith, and I wouldn't have even known where to begin with the legal process of transition. Highly recommend the Kentucky Youth Law Project for all transitioning children and teens. It's a struggle and who better to help than someone who will respect you and has first hand experience."

"[KYLP] was a great resource for info for lgbtq foster kids. They let me know as a foster mom I had little control with the school system - but advised me on how best to navigate it for my crew."

"My name is Alex P., I am sixteen years old, and a transgender male. My journey through life hasn’t been the easiest. Being transgender in a rural county was even worse. I grew up in Jessamine County, forced into a life that wasn’t mine by a father unwilling to change his beliefs for his own child. I faced torturous discrimination and bullying, even from my own “family”. Luckily, my supportive mother helped me to escape the horrendous conditions I once lived in. Once I felt safe to socially transition we came to a road-block. My name. My friends knew me as Alex, my mom knew me as Alex, my teachers knew me as Alex, but everything else said something different. I didn't know what to do or where to turn, that’s when I found The Kentucky Youth Law Project. I reached out to him, in hopes of somehow making some progress in my transition. We met for the first time in January of 2019, and it truly was eye opening. Keith Elston listened to my complicated situation with empathy and compassion, and immediately began planning ways to help me as much as possible. Our road ahead was a bit of a challenge, due to the fact that my parents have fifty fifty custody over me, and must agree on things such as legally changing their child’s name. I knew before this process even started my father wouldn’t support me at all, and I was correct. Despite the challenges we faced with my father that following May, I legally became, Alexander G. P., I never once imagined that I would have that possibility until I was able to make my own decisions. Keith used his personal experiences and knowledge to make a huge step in my transition possible. I can’t thank him enough for what he’s done for me. I believe that The Kentucky Youth Law Project will provide an immense amount of help to kids just like me."
