How does KYLP Carry Out its Mission?​

KYLP fulfills its mission through free legal aid, education, policy advocacy, and litigation for LGBTQIA+ youth. It addresses discrimination, promotes inclusivity, trains communities, and challenges unjust laws. KYLP fosters a more equitable legal landscape across Kentucky by empowering youth and influencing systemic reform.

The Vital Importance of
​Gender-Affirming Care

Gender-affirming care, including puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, is medically supported, safe, and vital for transgender youth experiencing gender dysphoria. These treatments reduce mental health risks and align patients’ physical traits with their gender identity. Opposition is often rooted in ideology, not science. 

LGBTQIA+ Youth &
School Climate

LGBTQIA+ students face widespread harassment, discrimination, and exclusion in schools, severely harming their mental health and academic success. Policies banning affirming symbols and outing students worsen conditions. Declining support systems like GSAs and increasing hate-fueled rhetoric contribute to toxic environments, especially for marginalized identities, amplifying risks of depression and suicide.

How does KYLP Serve Our Clients?

KYLP offers free legal services to LGBTQIA+ youth facing discrimination in schools, foster care, justice systems, or families. It partners with intermediaries—like CASA, shelters, and courts—to address systemic issues, train stakeholders, and promote inclusive legal practices, fostering a safe, equitable environment for vulnerable youth across Kentucky.

Bullying, LGBTQIA+ Youth
& Public Schools

LGBTQIA+ youth face significantly higher bullying rates than their peers, leading to increased mental health risks and school absenteeism. The brochure outlines prevention strategies, including promoting inclusivity, designating safe spaces, forming supportive clubs, training staff, and using inclusive language to ensure physical and emotional safety for LGBTQIA+ students.

Forced Outing Policies
Harm Students

Forced outing policies harm LGBTQIA+ youth by violating privacy, undermining trust, and increasing risks of rejection, trauma, and homelessness. These policies contradict medical consensus and federal law, stigmatize gender identity, and endanger student safety. Affirming environments and voluntary parental involvement foster healthier outcomes and protect students’ rights and well-being.
